So whats all this damn Alaska talk you might ask ....well, it just so happens that I am going to Alaska next August. I have been invited by a couple of guys from the church to go Hallibut and Salmon fishing and after a few days or working out the costs I am on board. It will take me all year to get the money together but it will be something great to work for and I think in the long run the trip will mean more to me because its something I am gonna work hard for....My money tree out back died years ago !!
I am so excited....Alaska for me is one of those top 5 places to visit in my lifetime.
Highlands of Scotland,London,Vietnam and Anzio,Italy. They round out the top 5.

Happy Christmas !!


Nick recently posted about his favorite Christmas/Holiday Movies and it got me to thinking about my favorite Christmas memories......This is basically for me but yall enjoy also !!


In no order .....




Trying to figure out how Santa brought horses to my grandparents house one year in the late 1970s.


Not being able to sleep as a kid because you know KNOW KNOW that you can hear Santa every time you shut your eyes.


Leaving Mamas homemade carrot cake out for Santa instead of cookies. We never once left him cookies.


Going to Nana and Ga's house on Christmas eve for dinner and presents. That was the Gregg side of our family . We celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve.


The year I got Daddy Dog from my Ga. I still have that stuffed dog.


Going to Granny and Grandaddy's after leaving Nana and Ga's house. We then watched old Miller family movies. The old 8mm stuff with the loud projector clickclickclickclick.....


The year I got so many smurfs and then most were scooped up in wadded wrapping paper and tossed away.....blech.


Watching favorite holiday movies with GREAT FRIENDS.

Well......Maybe those are the things Coach Saban will compare the loss to Auburn to on Monday at his weekly press conference ......Enjoy this weekend Auburn Nation. He is gonna be a good coach at Alabama ....no doubt about it but let me remind folks what he said this summer when asked about taking the Alabama job last winter...." Well, it was the only job really open at the time " WOW ......Did you see the look on Paul Bryant Jrs face in the stands ???Priceless

I am hoping that Coach Tuberville will get a contract extension at AU.....I am hoping that he is sincere when he says he wants to retire from coaching at Auburn.....That this will be his last coaching job ... I hope he stays ! He is 7-2 against Alabama in 9 years at Auburn. He is a good decent coach that has Auburn in a great place!

We regret to inform you .......

Its been a while since I posted but as many of you know I have been without a computer at home for a while. I am writing this post from work and just to let you know I am still without a computer. Obit Follows
Funeral services were held on Thursday November 14 for DELL Inspiron 1200. She died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday at Computer Customware, after a long illness. She is survived by her owner Jason and thousands of brothers and sisters. After serving for 3 years as the primary computer for Mr Gregg she noticed that she was not feeling herself and was starting to feel run down. After many attempts to upgrade and fighting a brave battle she succumbed to her symptoms. She will be missed by all her friends and family.

I am going out of town this weekend for the big National Youth Workers Convention over in Atlanta. Should be a fun time ...I really enjoy going to visit Atlanta. There are great places to eat and fun things to see in addition to the time that will be spent at the Conference .

Next week of course is Thanksgiving and as always we will be hosting the combined Gregg/Miller/Norwood/Segrest/Marshall family gathering at our house. Always a fun time and its really the only time during the year that my family gets together and is truly RELAXED.
We eat, take walks , sit outside and drink coffee, talk, play silly board games.....Just have a good time ....Now compare that to Christmas---YIKES!
Happy Thankgiving to everyone out there reading this .....

Fall TV so Far......
CHUCK-started out great ...really enjoyed it at first but the show has kinda tapered off....Still watching but......
REAPER-GREAT SHOW .....each week it has gotten better than the previous and the cast has really come along since the beginning . The highlights of the cast are Ray Wise as the Devil and Brett Harrison as Sam the main character. Ray Wise has been in a lot of shows over the years and also has appeared in a ton of movies ...he was also on the West Wing SO THERE!!
DANCING WITH THE STARS-Who knew i would get addicted to this show ...WOW

Charges in Religious Lawsuit Against Army Detailed

An Army major who was sued last week for allegedly threatening to retaliate against a soldier who convened a meeting of atheists, and whom Pentagon officials said could not be located, has been found via a MySpace page the Army major updates regularly.
Freddy J. Welborn was identified in a federal lawsuit filed last week by Army Spc. Jeremy Hall, 22, and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a watchdog organization. Because his name was mistakenly listed in the complaint as Paul Welborne, the Army said it was unable to locate him.
However, Mikey Weinstein, the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, said researchers working for his group discovered Welborn's MySpace page on Sunday morning. Weinstein said the complaint his organization and Hall filed against Welborn, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, will be amended and refiled in US District Court in Kansas City, Kansas on Tuesday to reflect Welborn's proper identity.
On Saturday, Lt. Col. James Hutton, a spokesman for multinational forces in Iraq, told an Associated Press reporter "several media reports list a person named Maj. Paul Welborne as having been involved in this situation."
"To date, we have not located any soldier by that name," Hutton told The Associated Press, in response to the story first reported by Truthout about the lawsuit filed against Welborn and the Pentagon.
The issue appeared to be an attempt to cast doubt on the validity of Hall's claims of widespread constitutional violations. However, hours after The Associated Press report was published, Weinstein's researchers and Hall were both able to locate Welborn, albeit under a different first name, at Combat Operations Base Speicher, Iraq, where Hall is serving his second tour of duty.
Hutton's statement to The Associated Press came on the heels of another Truthout report in which Weinstein said Hall was being threatened with bodily harm by other soldiers as a result of the lawsuit he had filed against Welborn and Defense Secretary Gates.
The lawsuit alleges Hall's First Amendment rights were violated beginning last Thanksgiving when, because he does not believe in God, he declined to participate in a Christian prayer ceremony commemorating the holiday.
"Immediately after plaintiff made it known he would decline to join hands and pray, he was confronted, in the presence of other military personnel, by the senior ranking ... staff sergeant who asked plaintiff why he did not want to pray, whereupon plaintiff explained because he is an atheist," says the lawsuit, a copy of which was provided to Truthout. "The staff sergeant asked plaintiff what an atheist is and plaintiff responded it meant that he (plaintiff) did not believe in God. This response caused the staff sergeant to tell plaintiff that he would have to sit elsewhere for the Thanksgiving dinner. Nonetheless, plaintiff sat at the table in silence and finished his meal."
Moreover, the complaint alleges that on August 7, when Hall received permission by an Army chaplain to organize a meeting of other soldiers who shared his atheist beliefs, his supervisor, Army Major Welborn, broke up the gathering and threatened to retaliate against the soldier by charging him with violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The complaint also alleges Welborn vowed to block Hall's reenlistment in the Army if the atheist group continued to meet - a violation of Hall's First Amendment rights under the Constitution. Welborn is named as a defendant in the lawsuit.
"During the course of the meeting, defendant Welborn confronted the attendees, disrupted the meeting and interfered with plaintiff Hall's and the other attendees' rights to discuss topics of their interests," the lawsuit alleges.
The complaint charges that Hall, who is based at Fort Riley, Kansas, has been forced to "submit to a religious test as a qualification to his post as a soldier in the United States Army," a violation of Article VI, Clause 3 of the Constitution.
Welborn, 44, who appears on his MySpace page in his Army uniform, wrote on his MySpace page that he is a devout Christian who received a bachelor's degree in "personal evangelism" and a minor in "Biblical world view" from Temple Tennessee University. He wrote that he is pursuing a second bachelor's degree in Christian studies from Calvary Bible College And Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. He lists his occupation as "Bible Study--Operation Iraqi Freedom" and wrote that his interest is evangelism and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
"Currently serving w/3rd Inf Div [3rd Infantry Division] Civil Military Operations (Governance) in Baghdad Iraq," Welborn wrote on his MySpace page. He describes himself as a ""Warrior for the Lord Jesus Christ." He wrote that he and his wife Carla "place all our Faith & Trust in our Savior the Lord Jesus - who provides eternal life to anyone that believes that he is the Son of God, that he was born of a virgin, lived as God in the flesh (as man) was crucified, died, and was buried then rose from the grave the third day, then acended [sic] to the right hand of the Father - True repentance (turning away from Sin to God) Being born again, Forgivness [sic] & Justification occure [sic] to the True Believer in Christ when Baptized w/God's Holy Spirit."
Additionally, Welborn endorses Stephen Mansfield's "The Faith of the American Soldier," a book that defends and praises controversial statements made by retired Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, the former deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence, who characterized the war on terrorism as a clash between Judeo-Christian values and Satan.
Welborn could not be reached for comment. He did not reply to an email sent to him through his MySpace page. A Pentagon spokesman said it is not uncommon for soldiers to maintain their own blogs or web sites and he did not believe Welborn's MySpace page violated military policy.
Weinstein, a former White House attorney under Ronald Reagan, former general counsel to H. Ross Perot, and who spent a decade as an Air Force Judge Advocate General (JAG), has been waging a war against the Department of Defense (DOD) for what he says is a blatant disregard of the Constitution and a pattern of forcing soldiers to embrace evangelical Christianity. Weinstein published a book on his fight: "With God on Our Side: One Man's War Against an Evangelical Coup in America's Military." He is also an Air Force veteran and a graduate of the Air Force Academy. Three generations of his family have attended US military academies.
Since he launched his watchdog organization nearly two years ago, Weinstein said he has been contacted by more than 5,000 active duty and retired soldiers, many of whom served or currently serve in Iraq, who told Weinstein they were pressured by their commanding officers to convert to Christianity.
Last month, the Pentagon's inspector general (IG) excoriated high-ranking military officials for engaging in evangelism while on duty and in uniform. The IG responded to a complaint filed last year by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation alleging DOD officials violated military regulations by appearing in a video promoting an evangelical Christian organization.
The IG agreed and issued a 47-page report that was highly critical of senior Army and Air Force personnel for participating in the video while in uniform and on active duty.
The report recommended Air Force Maj. Gen. Jack Catton, Army Brig. Gen. Bob Caslen, Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, Maj. Gen. Peter Sutton, and a colonel and lieutenant colonel whose names were redacted in the inspector general's report, "improperly endorsed and participated with a non-Federal entity while in uniform" and the men should be disciplined for misconduct. Caslen was formerly the deputy director for political-military affairs for the war on terrorism, directorate for strategic plans and policy, joint staff. He now oversees the 4,200 cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point. Caslen told DOD investigators he agreed to appear in the video upon learning other senior Pentagon officials had been interviewed for the promotional video.
The inspector general’s report recommended the "Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff of the Army take appropriate corrective action with respect to the military officers concerned."
The Army generals who appeared in the video appeared to be speaking on behalf of the military, but they did not obtain prior permission to appear in the video. They defended their actions, according to the IG's report, saying the "Christian Embassy had become a 'quasi-Federal entity,' since the DOD had endorsed the organization to General Officers for over 25 years."

Played cards Friday night with John,Luke,Jason,Nick and Myself. I cant speak for everyone else but I had a blast . It was your typical night out with the guys ....cards, cigars, Jack Daniels good stuff.
Sadly I must say I did not win BUT I played really good and stayed in it till the very last hand .....Mr Mielke was the winner and CONGRATS to him !!!

Tick Tock Tick Tock ...............

I am not sleeping ....as you can maybe tell by my post from almost 2am on Friday morning. To make matters worse I am at the church because my home laptop is not acting like himself lately. Maybe there is something in computerland that is causing all these problems but there seems to be a rash of computer breakdowns lately. Lane,John and now me ......Maybe its something in the water ...I dont know .
SO whats new around here ......
We are fast approaching the end of October and with that comes Halloween . Let me suggest something to all you ghoul lovers out there ....GO get you a pumpkin and carve it .....Dont settle for one of these crappy light up pumpkins . Those suck !!
Put down some paper and carve.....like you did when you were a child . Get your hands dirty with pumpking guts. Invite your friends over and make a party of it ....Just have fun doing it ....
On Halloween stick you a real wax candle in that sucker and enjoy!!!!!!
After all that is over with and all those kids are back home gettin sick ...Tune your TV over to Sci-Fi and watch GHOST HUNTERS.
They will be investigatiing the WAVERLY HILLS SANATORIUM in Kentucky. They will be live and I am sure it will be great .
Friday night I head to Selma alabama for an actual ghost hunt at Old Cahaba . Old Cahaba was the first state capitol of Alabama and has been abandoned for over 150 years.
I am so friggin excited . I will be going with Ray and Eagon and the rest of the Ghostbusters.

Good morning ...or evening . I guess it all depends on when you are reading this blog....its been a while since I sat down and composed ,what I am confident will be an engaging array of thoughts and ideas. So ENJOY!!
I am currently sitting here typing this out while being kept on hold on the telephone. I am learning all I need to know about Callaway Gardens over in Pine Mountain, Georgia . I need to order about 20 tickets for the youth group so we can go in December for the FANTASY IN LIGHTS show. As of right now I have been on hold for almost 20 minutes ....but hey its FANTASY IN LIGHTS!!! They do thank me for my patience and for calling Callaway Gardens .
Did you know they are situated on 13,000 acres of beautiful appalachian foothills. They have many vacation packages to offer.
Anyway .....if you have never been to FANTASY IN LIGHTS.....go see it ....Its pretty dang cool .

What else ??
Auburn seems to have righted a somewhat listing ship and they now seem more focused and determined in their playing efforts. I would have to say that their biggest test will be this coming Saturday as they play LSU at Death Valley. If we can get out of there with a win then ....GREAT!!! I pick Auburn ...but then again I always pick Auburn ...

October has been a great month for me .....Well in terms of things past at least. My life changed for the better last year and so far things have been SOOOO incredibly great its hard at times to put into words. Those of you out there that have been with me on this great ride.....THANKS!!!

In Living Color............

We are one week into the fall television season and here is my pick for the best new show out there .....
THE WAR on PBS. Yeah ......go figure huh???? Ken Burns is a genius when it comes to telling stories like these. If you have ever watched any of his other works you really should be watching this show. If you are a history buff.....if you have a grandad or grandmother who served in the war.....you should be watching this show.
I have managed to watch most of it over the past week and all I can say is WOW.
I remember watching THE CIVIL WAR over 10 years ago and it was great but this show has been different. First of all .....there is the old film that was shot before ,during and after the war. Vivid scenes of battles and the wonderful voiceovers of those who were really there. Thats one of the biggest differences ....we get to hear the stories in the voices of the men and women who were there. The other big difference is the incredible use of color film. I had no idea that it was used as much as it was to film battles and beach landings in Europe and The Pacific. It was stunning to see these faces in living color. STUNNING.
Listen to these guys talk about leaving there buddies on the field of battle.....I would be remiss if I did not tell you that I am choked up thinking about it right now.
I spent a big portion of my childhood traveling each summer with my grandparents to veterans reunions. I would sit in the rooms with these guys and just soak it all in....I believe that is what paved the way for me to be such a huge history buff.
I can hear my grandad right now in my head talking about his time over there.

The other shows on television right now are good ...dont get me wrong BUT do yourself a favor find this show on PBS or online and watch what you can ....Listen to these proud veterans talk about the work they did as if it was as simple as taking out the garbage or planting a garden. They are so modest about how they helped free the world from evil.
We are losing these folks at a rate of 1000 a day. It seems like so little but this is a wonderful tribute to their contribution to the world.
Go Watch.
Then find a local WWII veterens association and talk to these folks.......
Shake their hands and tell them THANKS!!

Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have been watching the news over the past few days you would know that many of the worlds leaders are meeting in New York City at the United Nations. They do this every year....they get together and talk about whats wrong in the world or perhaps maybe whats right. Here is the unique thing about the United Nations......if your country is a member then you get to send a representative to speak to the General Assembly. What does that mean?..... It means that nations the United States doesn't like can have an open forum before the world and the worlds media. The President of Iran is in New York this week. He speaks to the General Assembly tomorrow morning .
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was also invited to speak to a student forum at Columbia University. He spoke Monday and the protests have been pretty intense.
This is a man who has been called a terrorist. He hates the State of Israel and has called for its destruction. Has openly talked about a world where the USA is gone from the map. He says homosexuality does not exist in Iran. He supports the stoning of women. He has denied that the Holocaust happened while Hitler was in power.
This man is a lunatic. Plain and Simple I would say ......Folks are pretty pissed about his speaking at Columbia. For me its a double edged sword......Let him speak and folks will realize how incredibly crazy he is .....The audience back home in Iran has already bought what he is selling. What group is he speaking to besides that one back home ?
The other side is this .....Ignore him. Dont turn one camera in his direction....... Dont invite him anywhere......IGNORE HIM!

I believe in free speech and the right to assembly. I support Columbia Universitys right to invite ANYONE to speak.......But what does it accomplish in the end?
A madman is given a forum on our dime!!! Columbia University receives almost 22 million from the State of New York. I can only guess that they also receive money from the federal government......Thats money that comes from taxpayers... US...WE....YOU...ME....YOUR BROTHER....YOUR MOTHERS .....FATHERS......EVERYONE
I love the United States of America. I am maybe one of the most liberal men you will ever have the great pleasure of meeting. I believe in a government that should be bigger so that it can help its citizens. I hate this War we are fighting in Iraq but realize we are there for the long haul. I think Iran supports the insurgents in Iraq. But being liberal does not mean I wear blinders....and this guy is nuts and should maybe be held a little more accountable.

I hope President Ahmadinejad has a wonderful time in New York City....maybe he will get him one of those cool I LOVE NYC tshirts......maybe he will have a hot dog from a vendor outside the UN building.......maybe he will picnic in Central Park.....maybe he will tour all the great museums and take in a play or musical on Broadway......perhaps take a handsome cab ride through Little Italy or Chinatown .....maybe stroll Greenwich Village and see men walking around with their boyfriends and see the intense display of DIVERSITY that is the USA.....
Maybe he will decide that the rest of the world aint such a bad place and America is not the seat of evil and Satan......but I doubt it.....So until he rejects hate based on his religious beliefs and stops he diarreha of the mouth ....I think the world should just tell him to shut the hell up !!

It's just a break ........

I watched Auburn get beat today. I watched Auburn play bad. I am upset.
Whats wrong with Auburn?
I dont know and I am guessing that many folks dont know either. This next week is gonna be full of folks calling for heads to roll on the plains........I dont think we need a new head coach ....I dont think we need a new offensive line coach.....the special teams coach is fine .....the defense is doing what it can considering .........Tommy Tuberville has done wonders for this program and I think he is the man for the job. Things just need tweaking a bit ...here and there maybe . We might not win alot this year ......and guess what ?? Thats ok with me .
My drive to watch Auburn has dimished the last two years....ever since Daddy died .....but hear me now ....I AM NOT LEAVING THE TIGERS......I say WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!!!!!!

They have had a few times in the last three weeks where they showed a little spark......Kodi Burns is gonna be good ! Short of that ...I dont know whats gonna happen the rest of the season.
I want to say we are gonna win the rest of the games this season but its gonna be a LONNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGG season.

So maybe we should just take a little break ....enjoy the fresh fall weather that is just around the corner.....let your windows up and enjoy the cool nights .......Start getting excited about the upcoming holiday season that is just around the corner........sit on your porch or patio and have your favorite adult beverage with someone special in your life......take a drive out into the country with your car windows all the way down and your favorite music LOUDLY playing on the radio.....go on a weekend trip to the beach or the mountains.....Auburn football will be here when we get back !!!!

For many years Ben Stein has written a biweekly column for the online website called "Monday Night At Morton's." (Morton's is a famous chain of Steakhouses known to be frequented by movie stars and famous people from around the globe.) Now, Ben is terminating the column to move on to other things in his life. How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today's World?
As I begin to write this, I "slug" it, as we writers say, which means I put a heading on top of the document to identify it. This heading is "eonlineFINAL," and it gives me a shiver to write it. I have been doing this column for so long that I cannot even recall when I started. I loved writing this column so much for so long I came to believe it would never end.
It worked well for a long time, but gradually, my changing as a person and the world's change have overtaken it. On a small scale, Morton's, while better than ever, no longer attracts as many stars as it used to. It still brings in the rich people in droves and definitely some stars. I saw Samuel L. Jackson there a few days ago, and we had a nice visit, and right before that, I saw and had a splendid talk with Warren Beatty in an elevator, in which we agreed that Splendor in the Grass was a super movie. But Morton's is not the star galaxy it once was, though it probably will be again.
Beyond that, a bigger change has happened. I no longer think Hollywood stars are terribly important. They are uniformly pleasant, friendly people, and they treat me better than I deserve to be treated. But a man or woman who makes a huge wage for memorizing lines and reciting them in front of a camera is no longer my idea of a shining star we should all look up to.
How can a man or woman who makes an eight-figure wage and lives in insane luxury really be a star in today's world, if by a "star" we mean someone bright and powerful and attractive as a role model? Real stars are not riding around in the backs of limousines or in Porsches or getting trained in yoga or Pilates and eating only raw fruit while they have Vietnamese girls do their nails.
They can be interesting, nice people, but they are not heroes to me any longer. A real star is the soldier of the 4th Infantry Division who poked his head into a hole on a farm near Tikrit, Iraq. He could have been met by a bomb or a hail of AK-47 bullets. Instead, he faced an abject Saddam Hussein and the gratitude of all of the decent people of the world.
A real star is the U.S. soldier who was sent to disarm a bomb next to a road north of Baghdad. He approached it, and the bomb went off and killed him.
A real star, the kind who haunts my memory night and day, is the U.S. soldier in Baghdad who saw a little girl playing with a piece of unexploded ordnance on a street near where he was guarding a station. He pushed her aside and threw himself on it just as it exploded. He left a family desolate in California and a little girl alive in Baghdad.
The stars who deserve media attention are not the ones who have lavish weddings on TV but the ones who patrol the streets of Mosul even after two of their buddies were murdered and their bodies battered and stripped for the sin of trying to protect Iraqis from terrorists.
We put couples with incomes of $100 million a year on the covers of our magazines. The noncoms and officers who barely scrape by on military pay but stand on guard in Afghanistan and Iraq and on ships and in submarines and near the Arctic Circle are anonymous as they live and die.
I am no longer comfortable being a part of the system that has such poor values, and I do not want to perpetuate those values by pretending that who is eating at Morton's is a big subject.
There are plenty of other stars in the American firmament...the policemen and women who go off on patrol in South Central and have no idea if they will return alive; the orderlies and paramedics who bring in people who have been in terrible accidents and prepare them for surgery; the teachers and nurses who throw their whole spirits into caring for autistic children; the kind men and women who work in hospices and in cancer wards.
Think of each and every fireman who was running up the stairs at the World Trade Center as the towers began to collapse. Now you have my idea of a real hero.
We are not responsible for the operation of the universe, and what happens to us is not terribly important. God is real, not a fiction; and when we turn over our lives to Him, He takes far better care of us than we could ever do for ourselves. In a word, we make ourselves sane when we fire ourselves as the directors of the movie of our lives and turn the power over to Him.
I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters. This is my highest and best use as a human. I can put it another way. Years ago, I realized I could never be as great an actor as Olivier or as good a comic as Steve Martin...or Martin Mull or Fred Willard--or as good an economist as Samuelson or Friedman or as good a writer as Fitzgerald. Or even remotely close to any of them.
But I could be a devoted father to my son, husband to my wife and, above all, a good son to the parents who had done so much for me. This came to be my main task in life. I did it moderately well with my son, pretty well with my wife and well indeed with my parents (with my sister's help). I cared for and paid attention to them in their declining years. I stayed with my father as he got sick, went into extremis and then into a coma and then entered immortality with my sister and me reading him the Psalms.
This was the only point at which my life touched the lives of the soldiers in Iraq or the firefighters in New York. I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty, in return for the lavish life God has devolved upon me, to help others He has placed in my path. This is my highest and best use as a human.
Faith is not believing that God can. It is knowing that God will.

A PAIN IN THE FREAKIN NECK ........

Literally ......
My neck started hurting about a week ago and got worse as the week went on .....and when I say hurt I mean PAIN!!!!! Horse standing on your groin pain. Hot poker in the eye pain. A small tear in a ligament in my neck was the diagnosis.....how in the crap that happened I dont know but I finally got some meds and am trying to get through this part but WOW ....I have not hurt like this in a while ......

Lets talk about the Auburn game for just a second .....I was upset to say the least. I did not attend Auburn University but its my school and my team and I want them to win every time they take the field. Having said that .....Its ok that they lost! The sun did come up Sunday morning it was just a little less orange than the day before. Am I moving away from LOVING Auburn ....Nah. I will always love Auburn but our relationship has moved to another level over the last two seasons. My Dad so enjoyed watching Auburn Football games and with him gone it really is different for me ......I still get excited and yell at the TV. Not as loud as John McF. though ....WOW can he yell LOUD at a TV HAHA ! I can tell you this ... My Dad would have loved watching a game with John McF.......Hate they never met
Things are different now thats all I am saying......I have friends who are deciding whether or not to move to another country.....I have friends at church who have children that are going back to Iraq in two weeks for their THIRD tour of duty ....I have friends who have recently been diagnosed with cancer .....I have self doubts about my job.....and my neck hurts. Auburn football just moved to another spot in my List of whats important. My faith....my family ....my friends.....my job....If i had a dog he would be listed here also ....little Artanis!!
Dont get me wrong ...I will watch them next Saturday ....I will still wear my orange game day gear....but from now on its a whole new ballgame ! Some of you will say "Fair weather fan you have become" and by some of you I mean Yoda.......but thats not the case ....This has been coming for a long time .....18 months or more. Anyway ....WAR EAGLE !

Come Fly With Me...............

Alright Alright ....
I have heard from too many people this weekend about my posting this blog....I even heard from people that I did not even know were reading this blog !!!! Perhaps I have built this one up a little too much BUT having said all that ......Here Goes....
I went flying on Labor Day ......I dont mean I boarded a commercial airline and flew across the country.....I dont mean I smoked pot and was flying man .....I mean I got into a Cessna 172 and flew from Wetumpka Alabama to Auburn Alabama. This plane is small. It only seats 4 people and those four are gonna be a tad bit cramped....I mean I am a big guy and I was cramped in the front seat. I meant to get pics of the plane...Oops !
My buddy Jason flew down from Bham and picked me up . We then flew over to Tuskegee and did a "touch and go". That means we landed at Moton Field,Home to the Tuskegee Black Airman, and as soon as the wheels touched down, Jason hit the gas and we were back in the air . IT WAS AMAZING!!!!! It was nice to see my hometown from the air . From there we flew over to Auburn and flew a couple of circles around the campus and Jordan Hare Stadium. Not to sound like too much of an Auburn Nerd but.....WOW!!!! It was so cool to see that stadium from the air like that .....we were about 2300 feet up when the above picture was made. From Auburn it was back to Wetumpka .
I had an absolute blast flying on Monday ....I really am having a hard time putting into words how much fun it was. I was not the least bit nervous about flying in a smaller plane and to be honest it was better for me than a large jet. I had complete confidence in Jason as a pilot. Let me thank him again here for taking me up....THANKS !! I look forward to doing it again ...
SO thats what I did Monday .....maybe not a big deal to any of you folks out there reading but it was a big thing for me .....Not to sound too cheesy or anything but it was almost spritual....To be up above everything and have a chance to just reflect ....NICE!

Heck yeah !!!! I have always had a small little love affair with App State. My Grandad was born and raised in Boone NC ( home of Appalachian State U)
Makes me proud that App State beat Michigan.......GO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have not had the chance to watch Friday Night Lights.....Go rent the 1st season DVD before the second season starts in a few weeks.....You will not be sorry!

Administration Fights Dem Plan to Boost School Aid for Vets

The Bush administration opposes a Democratic effort to restore full educational benefits for returning veterans, according to an official's comments last week.
Senate Democrats, led by Virginia's Jim Webb, want the government to pay every penny of veterans' educational costs, from tuition at a public university to books, housing and a monthly stipend.
Such a benefit was a major feature of the historic 1944 G.I. Bill, which put more than eight million U.S. soldiers through college and is now credited by historians as fueling the expansion of America's middle class in the post-war era.
But in recent years the benefit has dwindled; under the current law, passed in 1985, veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan can expect Uncle Sam to cover only 75 percent of their tuition costs. That's not enough, say Democrats and veterans' advocates.
More than 450,000 used the benefit last year, at a cost to taxpayers of $2 billion, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which administers the program. The Democratic proposal would cost an additional $5.4 billion a year, the VA estimates - and that's too much, it says.
Keith Wilson, the VA official who oversees the education benefits program, told senators last Friday the proposal would make "administration of this program cumbersome," and its costs would "tax existing VA resources."
But Democrats appeared unfazed. The current GI Bill is "woefully inadequate, given the service our military men and women have provided since [the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks]," said Webb, a combat veteran and former Navy secretary, who introduced the legislation that would expand the program. Webb's bill has 19 Democratic co-sponsors, including Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and John Kerry, D-Mass., a fellow veteran.
Patrick Campbell of the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) endorsed Webb's plan. Better educational benefits are essential for attracting talented, ambitious recruits, he asserted.
"If the Department of Defense said, 'If you serve your country, we'll pay for school no questions asked,' ... [that] would increase the quality of our recruits," said Campbell, "instead of what we're doing now, which is lowering our standards."

You dont look a day over 60...........

So a few days ago I might have mentioned that I had something important to talk about here .....but maybe not so much. I wanted my 75 blog post to be big and grand. Important in some way but as it goes in the blogging world I cannot seem to get any profound thoughts going lately. Perhaps with me being back in school that is taking all my thoughts and energy right now but never the less I am posting something tonight.
As I just mentioned school is taking a good bit of my time right now. I can already tell it's going to be a real balancing act to make everything work. I am not the first person to be going back to school after ten years. I am not the first to be doing it while working full time. I am not married so I dont have to deal with that added stress .The Lit class is going to be a blast and the discussion has already been fun. I am in school on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I have Church stuff on Wednesday night and that includes church suppers, small group with the kids and then choir. Mondays this fall will include church meetings and Montgomery Quarterback Club meetings. That leaves Friday and Saturday nights to have a social life......
It will work out but from now until I graduate its gonna be a bumpy ride at times....Fasten your seat belt

Mr.Nick" I post about things that Jason is going to post about" Mielke posted on his blog a small entry about going to Atlanta last Friday.
I really enjoy Atlanta and dont know why we dont all go up more often . Its an easy 2 hour drive and once you are there if you dont feel like driving too much you can easily use the MARTA. Atlanta is not the most pedestrian friendly town but its a fun town and if you have a small sense of where things are ie;Downtown,Midtown,Buckhead,285,400,Turner Field, Georgia Dome and World Congress Center, Sweet Auburn District....then you can easily find your way around.
We did get "turned around" trying to find the IKEA STORE but we finally found it and MAN OH MAN what a store it is .....First of all it is GIGANTIC . Rows and Rows of easily assembled modular furniture. If your tastes tend to run towards the heavy oaks and cherry woods of the later 19th century UMMMMMMMMM dont go to IKEA !! I got a few things while there and even got a new bedside table ....Its a fun store and I cannot wait to be heading back there something soon.

I am glad to say that the HOT HOT HOT weather we had for almost the entire month of August finally seems to have broken...... Montogmery had 14 days of 100+ degree temperatures!!! That broke all the records. Thats just sick...Sick I say. Although the calendar says summer does not end until September 23 the UNOFFICIAL end of summer is this coming weekend. So get out them white pants and wear them with pride for the last time .....all I can say to summer is GOOD RIDDENCE

With the end of summer also comes the end of my summer tv viewing schedule ....below are the hits and misses for me
DOCTOR WHO
Luke and Jackie LOVE this show but I have not been able to get into like I thought I would. But I also have not given it my 100% attention. Maybe I need to get the DVDs
ACE OF CAKES
Season two has been pretty dang good . You can tell the folks at Charm City Cakes are enjoying the fame that has come with being on TV but they are also staying pretty grounded. The tattoo episode was great
BUILD IT BIGGER
The host of this show goes around the world to check out how things are not only built but how they are built bigger and bigger and bigger. The best part is the host Danny Forrester, no stranger to building things since his background is construction, he always seems to get laugh from the craziest of things.
RESCUE ME
Maybe the best show on cable. Dennis Leary is amazing
CITIES OF THE UNDERWORLD
Seeing some of the creepy but FASCINATING things that lurk under world cities like , Boston, New York City, London, Paris and Berlin, is just amazing.
This, That and the Other.......
I read a couple of good books this summer.....If God Is Love,God Is not Great,Presidential Courage,Grace Eventually and The Cell. I would recommend them all to anyone....
I also read again ....A Walk In The Woods, Band Of Brothers and Wicked

Ten years ago my oldest Nephew Hunter was born .....Its been an amazing journey watching him mature into the incredible young man he has become. Happy Birthday Hunter ...I LOVE YOU!Finally got me a new iPod. 30g ....currently has about 2500 songs and couple of tv shows on it ....
And finally I think with the turning of the page onto blog posting number 76 it is fitting that I change up the layout a bit.....let me know what you all think...
Its been fun writing and posting and getting to share with everyone....I look forward to maybe 75 more.

A NEW BLOG.......

Ok ....So Mr.Mielke stole my blog idea!!!! Then he had the nerve to tell me to post something on here......I really think at some point I mentioned my blog idea and he STOLE IT ....Tsk Tsk ..

On with the show though ......
This week I officially became a college student again after an absence of 10 years. Tuesday night was my first night back and it is something I will for sure have to get used to again . Main thing is this though....I enjoyed it. It felt right to be there and I am excited to be back . It might take me a while to finish my degree but I am going to do it ....once class at a time.

I am still supporting John Edwards for President but I really believe that Sen. Hillary Clinton is the person to beat in the Democratic party . I also think that we will have our first female President come January 20,2009. A cool thought ....something just for fun ...if she wins then we will have had the following occur BUSH41 -CLINTON42-BUSH43 - CLINTON44?....just a thought
I like John Edwards because he seems to be saying and doing things to try and force other candidates to be honest. It's a sorry thing that he has to do that .....but we have all heard about folks running for office who really have no chance to win but they do it just to keep others honest. Listen to what he is saying ....see what ya think.

I will not even begin to talk about the heat.

I have the best friends in the whole world. Hands down the best.....I would put them up against anyone ...anywhere ...anytime. I love each and everyone of them. You all know who you are ....From Oceanside California to Montgomery Alabama to Birmingham Alabama.

I want to go to the Ikea store in Atlanta SOON ...anyone wanna go ??

Why Asheville ??

I sat down to write a blog about my recent trip to North Carolina. I cannot believe it but I have had a hard time getting something down here .....Most anyone who reads my blog on a regular basis knows that I love Western North Carolina more than just about anything....I will tell you this anywhere in the southeast that has daytime temperatures of 57 degrees is somewhere that I want to visit and maybe eventually live. That temperature was up on Mount Mitchell and it was fantastic.....

So I decided to just post some pictures about from my trip and to let them tell the story about Asheville and the Asheville area ....

Most all of the pictures are from my most recent trip but some are from other times I have been this past year. Main thing is this though.....I love Asheville and Western North Carolina .
